Working theory / public doorway

How does useful understanding survive a system?

Adaptive Systems Theory studies how useful understanding survives, degrades, or disappears as information moves through a system.

Working release: AST is developed enough to be examined, challenged, and applied, but it is not presented as finished or definitive.

The public diagnostic question

What condition made this outcome predictable?

AST changes the level of analysis without removing responsibility. It asks what the system made visible, what it made difficult to notice, what meaning survived movement, and what action became coherent from within the available orientation.

Many failures begin before the bad decision: meaning stops surviving the system.

The adaptive sequence

Reality becomes action through a chain of interpretation.

Reality→Observation→Baseline→Information Fidelity→Orientation→Decision→Action→Feedback→Baseline Update

A recognizable example

Hidden load.

A team appears stable because one person keeps catching problems before anyone else sees them. Leadership sees reliability. The system learns that the process works.

AST asks what the system has become dependent on, what information is not surviving upward, and what would become visible if the person stopped compensating.

The point is not to find a hero or a villain. The point is to update the baseline before the hidden load becomes a visible failure.

The boundary

AST is the theory. PSC is the application layer.

PSC applies this lens to live organizations, teams, leaders, workflows, healthcare operations, and technical-human systems. The Rapid Systems Diagnostic is a practical method for examining one recurring pattern.
